Experimental Classroom: Survey Results
I asked the students to tell me about their experience. Here are some answers:
There is always room for change meaning we can move our seats wherever. It is a good change from just rows of tables since it is really easy to get bored in the same classroom.. It has different seating types like couches and high chairs to suit your preferance.
I have enjoyed the experimental classroom, as I feel closer among the teacher and students as it is a small classroom. Another thing I enjoyed about the experimental classroom is room lay out that makes group activities more cooperative. Overall the classroom has made my first in-person course more enjoyable.
The seating arrangements are organized and diverse and I like how everything is divided. The seating's are comfortable and adjustable and I especially like the window view in the classroom. The Wi-Fi in the classroom can be a bit slow sometimes.
The experimental classroom makes me feel more comfortable in class because it breaks the stereotypical image of class rooms that only have desks. Also I believe that it makes group assignments more convenient because we have materials such as white boards available to students, and how the seats are designed to seat more than one person, and become separated if a student wanted it too. I would rather have more college classrooms designed like this, because I think it makes learning the course material more interesting.
I like that I can adjust the space to suit me, with or without a desk, on a couch or at a table. However, noting we either write or type in the class, having more desk arrangements would be ideal, as well as a higher monitor, it's hard to see in a corner over other peoples heads or through their bodies. Also add a shade curtain, the sun is bright here in houston, and while it may not be shining directly in our faces, it gives glare over the screen on the monitor that's already in the room. Aside from that I have enjoyed the space, openness and functionality so far, it's definitely an improvement from the rigidness of a traditional classroom.
I have been enjoying the classroom throughout this semester it has to be my favorite setup. For people who don't like change as much, like myself, gets a little angsty when the classroom shifts, but nothing I don't get used to within a class period. So what I'm trying to say after all that is that it's a great classroom where I enjoy to learn at.
I really like the dynamism of the class. I have very much enjoyed the different activities we've done in class. The classroom seats are quite comfortable.
It would be better to have normal desks. I find it much more comftarbe to have a desk and a chair like where i sit in the back. But the chairs in the back are too high.
The overall concept of the experimental classroom is good. I like that the desks have integrated whiteboards so that you are able to write on them. However, I don't think I like it in a "learning" setting. I can see the classroom being used for meetings and such, but I much rather prefer a regular classroom if I am learning.
