Humanizing Online Courses

In online, asynchronous classes, it can be difficult to feel like you are connecting with students. Sometimes it feels like endless email and grading. Here are some ways I attempt to connect:

  • Hold a synchronous virtual introductory session (recorded for those who can’t make it).

  • Give at least two surveys asking students to evaluate their progress and ask how the professor can help

  • Use the message feature in Canvas Grades to follow up with students who did not turn in major assignments

  • Hold virtual office hours via Webex scheduler

  • Use Announcements like a blog, with reminders about assignment directions and deadlines, general feedback about grades, study skill tips, and pep talks.
