Humanizing Online Courses
In online, asynchronous classes, it can be difficult to feel like you are connecting with students. Sometimes it feels like endless email and grading. Here are some ways I attempt to connect:
Hold a synchronous virtual introductory session (recorded for those who can’t make it).
Give at least two surveys asking students to evaluate their progress and ask how the professor can help
Use the message feature in Canvas Grades to follow up with students who did not turn in major assignments
Hold virtual office hours via Webex scheduler
Use Announcements like a blog, with reminders about assignment directions and deadlines, general feedback about grades, study skill tips, and pep talks.
