Virtual Escape Room

As part of my Innovation Fellowship independent design project, I developed a game based on an escape room. It’s available in the Canvas LMS Commons.

I have played this with students in my synchronous online history course. I divided the class into breakout rooms and each group worked their way through the module. They raised their hand if they needed a hint, and raised their hand when they finished. The first team to get the “exit word” correct was the winner. The correct access codes are listed in the module, unpublished, so you as the facilitator can see them, but teams cannot. Teams took between 15-30 minutes to finish. You could add or subtract steps as you see fit!

You can also do this in a face-to-face class by splitting the students in teams.

It will also work in an online anytime course. Students can work individually and time themselves. Provide a prize to the individual with the quickest time (like bonus points on an assignment).

You can change this module to suit your content needs.

I helped develop a physical room as well. More on that later!
