Brain Training for Better Working Memory

What is Working Memory?

Working memory serves as the brain's notepad, a crucial cognitive function that temporarily stores and manipulates information necessary for complex cognitive tasks. Imagine it as the brain's method of jotting down reminders on a metaphysical Post-it note. For example, it's that internal nudge that prompts you to remember your lunch before you dash off to class. However, there are moments when my working memory decides to take an unscheduled leave of absence, resulting in the all-too-familiar scenario of having to grab last minute fast food.

Envision your working memory as a personal assistant, diligently reminding you of upcoming obligations—be it an impending examination, a friend's birthday celebration, or that seriously-I’m-going-to-do-it-this-time vow to start a fitness regime. If your brain’s personal assistant seems to overlook quite a few reminders that leaves you with a trail of unchecked commitments.

Why does working memory matter?

The significance of a strong working memory extends far beyond mere reminders, though. It is the linchpin in following instructions, solving intricate problems, and juggling multiple tasks simultaneously, without descending into turmoil. Given the myriad challenges that school and life throw at us, maintaining an orderly mental space is really important.

Working memory is instrumental in various cognitive processes, including the retention of facts and figures, comprehension and memorization of complex systems of knowledge (such as language and mathematics), execution of tasks, and effective time management. So… a lot of the important things we need to remember and understand.

How to improve working memory?

For those experiencing lapses in your working memory, there's hope: working memory can be fortified. The strategy to get started on improvement is straightforward—deconstruct your tasks into manageable segments and dedicate your focus singularly, sidestepping the pitfalls of multitasking. Engage your brain with puzzles and games that stimulate cognitive functions, akin to opting for a mental crossword puzzle over a physical CrossFit session.

Working memory is a fundamental thread in keeping your executive function together. By understanding and nurturing this capacity, we can enhance our ability to process, retain, and utilize information effectively, paving the way for a more organized and productive life.
