In a recent professional development session, the trainer asked the following question:

If you can’t assign a 500-word essay, what could you do instead?

It’s a simple question, but an important one. What are ways we can swap traditional assignments for untraditional ones? How can we meet the same objectives by changing from a boring assignment to a creative one?

Here are some of the ideas we came up with for as an alternate for a 500-word essay:

  • Short video presentation

  • Infographic

  • Interview format

  • Social media post

  • Brochure

  • Cartoon/comic

  • Google slides presentation

  • Annotated timeline

If you’re looking for something new, just ask yourself: If not this, then what? There’s always a creative answer!
