Virtual Office Makeover
Decorating my office, organizing my supplies, and readying my classroom are all part of my beginning-of-term rituals. I haven’t been in my office since March. Well, I went back in with gloves and PPE during a 30-minute scheduled retrieval operation in April. Everything I failed to get during that rescue mission will be locked inside until who knows when.
In the absence of my physical office, I’ve opted to create a Bitmoji recreation. Although I’ve primarily seen K-12 teachers doing this, there’s no reason college/university professors shouldn’t join the fun.
I’m a big fan of the graphics design website Canva, so that’s where I created mine. A lovely person in the Canva Teachers Community posted her tutorial and I followed along.
As far as personalization goes, I chose to reflect the following:
Some of the elements of my home office, which has wood floors and green walls
My values (rainbow heart for allyship, globe, and of course, lots of books)
My dog (constant work-at-home companion and frequent visitor to my online sessions)
My personality (fun, studious, approachable)
My Bitmoji virtual office is perpetually displayed in my New Row virtual classroom. When students or colleagues log in, it’s the first thing they see.
Here’s the finished product!
