Why I No Longer Teach Standardized Test Prep

Working in the college counseling department was interesting.

I developed and taught courses for my 9th grade students to learn study skills, college options, and financial responsibility.

I also taught standardized test prep. Four classes per day. Five days a week.

I thought if I focused on getting kids to raise their test scores, college success would be a given for them.

But that wasn’t the case.

While I enjoyed helping students with test-taking strategies, I became frustrated that many of them were missing the essential knowledge and skills to be successful at standardized tests.

Students need critical thinking and emotional intelligence to do well on standardized tests.

That’s why I’ve pivoted to teaching college readiness in my own programs on Altering Course. I feel more confident than ever and I love sharing that knowledge with families.
