Teaching College Prep Across the Pond

On the last day of my teaching assistantship of the Ph.D. program at the University of Houston, I gave my students some news.

“I’ve accepted a job in England. I’ll be moving in two months.”

I was touched that they were sad I wouldn’t be back the next year. It’s always good to leave on a high note.

So, I traded my big city apartment in Houston for school housing in a tiny British village.

Several years teaching abroad in an international school gave me an even deeper appreciation for our diverse backgrounds.

I learned a lot about college preparation and admissions for different countries. A university in England operates differently than a university in Japan. American colleges have different prerequisites than colleges in Brazil.

But whatever higher education track a student pursues, the required skills are the same. It’s what I call “ The Four S’s of College Prep .”

So, now you know why I’ll occasionally slip into British spelling or vernacular and why I can’t function without several cups of English breakfast per day.
